MudGirls Dedication
We’Moon 2010 is dedicated to women who are reinventing the wheel by re-imagining our dwellings. As building trades are industrialized around the world, people lose touch with the basic empowerment of creating our own shelter, a job traditionally done by women in many cultures. Our modern buildings are expensive, often toxic, and giant wasters of energy. The natural building movement, pioneered in large part by women such as Becky Bee, Linda Smiley and Athena Swentzell Steen, addresses these issues by combining ancient techniques with new innovations.
Working with unprocessed, local materials like earth, stone and straw, and using salvaged resources, permaculture design principles, and a small-is-beautiful aesthetic, MudGirls is one organization putting these ideas into motion. The women of this consensus-based, non-hierarchical collective based in BC, Canada, seek to empower themselves and others by sharing natural building knowledge and skills. MudGirls works mostly with cob: a durable, sculptural mixture of sand, clay, straw and water. They barter their work, offer affordable owner-builder assistance, organize low-cost workshops, and work to facilitate the creation of not only beautiful, healing homes, but a joyful, connecting process of building. We dedicate a portion of the proceeds from this year’s We’Moon to MudGirls for furthering their mission. See www.Mudgirls.ca to donate directly, and for more inspiration to get muddy !
